40% OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN A&D LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB, ACCORDING TO AVIATION WEEK (1567 hits)
AVIATION WEEK, the largest multimedia information and services provider to the global aviation, aerospace and defense (A&D) industries, today released preliminary results from its 2010 Workforce and Young Professional/Student Study, which show that 40% of young professionals in A&D are looking for a new job, either inside or outside their current employers. The results were announced during the Farnborough Airshow's Futures Day, a special program designed to motivate young people to pursue a career path in the A&D industry.
This year, AVIATION WEEK's highly regarded Workforce Study, a mainstay for A&D planning and trend analysis since 1997, has been enhanced with a groundbreaking, new "Young Professionals and University Student" component. Data gathered directly from young professionals and college engineering students will be used to inform A&D companies on ways to address critical workforce issues, such as supporting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and recruiting and retaining talent. Companies that listen to what matters most to this generation and offer technological challenges, ongoing learning/professional development and programs that value the individual are the most likely to retain young professionals and attract the top graduates.
"We asked students and young pros about what drives their career choices, what they think of A&D as a career, and what the industry needs to do to attract and retain them," said Carole Rickard Hedden, special projects editor, AVIATION WEEK. "Smart companies will 'sell' themselves to their current employees-- not just spend on recruiting outside."
Produced in partnership with the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), and Hitachi Consulting, AVIATION WEEK's Workforce Study is the official industry report, providing a single source of reliable data that analyzes current A&D workforce issues, trends and opportunities. A thorough overview of the study results will be in the August 16 issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology.
